( CHARACTER INFORMATION )

Name/Work Name: Rukia Kuchiki/"Usagi"
Canon: Bleach
Canon Point: After the Soul Society Arc
AU/CRAU: N
Age: Physically, around 17. Actually hundreds of years old.
History: Here.
Personality: Initially--that is, when she first meets Ichigo, Rukia is abrasive. She's absolutely no-nonsense and takes her duties very seriously. She takes offense at Ichigo's treating her like a kid, and it's this treatment that leads her to lash out at him. Indeed, Rukia has somewhat of a hairpin trigger; insult her art, shinigami, or the Soul Society, and she'll lash out. Usually, this ends with a well-aimed punch or kick--all are intentional, and all are meant to show that she absolutely means business.

Of course, this seriousness is somewhat confusing when one gets to know Rukia. She's actually a dork. Rukia absolutely loves bunnies, to the point where she'll drop anything for them. Her art, too, is something in which she takes pride--even though it's honestly not that good. Point this out, though, and Rukia lashes out with kido, a physical punch or kick, or a drawing on someone's face. Rukia's silliness is further emphasized by her choice of recreational reading material: She absolutely loves period dramas. Rukia tends to even read them aloud, complete with unique voices, more often than not. Rukia sees this as nothing embarrassing... but she does get embarrassed when she thinks that people are making fun of her for it.

Rukia is a fantastic actress, too. She's able to slip into different roles easily. Case in point: When Rukia and her friends are at risk of getting into trouble, she cries alligator tears and acts her way through an excuse. It's one of her many talents; Rukia's exceptionally talented at it, too, to the point where most people see her as bubbly and bright. Indeed, it's this ability that allows her to easily conceal her true emotions.

And so Rukia isn't good at expressing her emotions. She comes from the Kuchiki family, who prides themselves on their being stoic, or so she thinks. To Rukia, showing emotion is a weakness. It's because of this mindset, solidified strongly in her mind, that Rukia refuses to even cry if she can help it. It's a rare sight to see her cry, but it does happen, especially if someone she cares about very deeply. Rukia tends to internalize a lot of her suffering; she genuinely believes she does not deserve good things. Rukia's sense of self-worth is incredibly low, which comes in part from not succeeding as much as she'd like during her time at the academy, and from not securing a seat in her squad. She perceives Byakuya, her adopt brother's, iciness toward her as a reflection of her own worth: He does not think much of her, as she thinks, so she feels as if she has to walk on eggshells around him.

Underneath her hard, cold exterior, Rukia is genuinely kind. She may seem pushy, but that's because she knows she's able to get results that way. She pulls no punches--literally--especially when it comes to Ichigo. Rukia's more likely to pay attention to others than herself. While Rukia knows she has an image to uphold... still, she tends not to give much thought to her own well-being. Instead, she focuses on others.

It's her pride that's another defining trait of Rukia's: It's where her strict adherence to the rules comes in. Rukia can seem almost obsessive about her duties; Byakuya's taking in her resulted in Rukia's taking her duties extremely seriously. As such, when Rukia is around someone in a higher position of power than she is, she's extremely respectful--almost to a fault! This is referenced by Kaien Shiba when she first enters the thirteenth squad; he points out that she "jumps out of her skin" whenever she sees him. Indeed, it also takes her a while to address Kaien casually. It is difficult for Rukia to break out of her intensely respectful, dutiful nature. That makes her bending the rules seem so shocking, even though she's not that averse to going against them: She willingly transfers her powers to a human, and she does so knowing full well the consequences of her actions. Yet she does it--and when the time comes for her to be punished, she accepts it without a fight. Rukia's resigned to her fate; she believes that nothing she does will change that. Additionally, Rukia is not above insulting people who have annoyed her! She's also not afraid to say when she doesn't care for something.

However! Her icy exterior can shatter with a few well-placed words. Rukia puts on a strong front, and when she's accepted something, she's absolutely committed to following it through. Yet when given a sense of hope, Rukia can latch onto it. Case in point: When she's marched to her execution and Captain Gin Ichimaru offers her hope. Rukia does not handle it well, though. She loses control of her calm demeanor, and she shows more emotion than she has in a very long time: Rukia screams, Rukia cries, and she hates herself for falling for that glimmer of hope.

Despite Rukia's horrible sense of self-worth, though, she genuinely does care about people. She adores those she becomes close to, even if she doesn't believe she should. Rukia's been conditioned to believe that forging strong relationships is nothing but trouble. Despite Rukia's act that she doesn't care deeply for anyone, she does care. Rukia cares very, very much, enough that she cries when Ichigo is hurt from Renji and Byakuya's coming to fetch her, she cries and pushes him away in order to save him. Rukia dwells on her memories often--it's one of the reasons she feels so terrible for Ichigo's getting hurt "because of her." After all, it is she who ended up taking the life of her lieutenant when he was possessed by a particularly nefarious Hollow. Rukia carries that guilt with her for a long time--and she deeply believes that she deserves to die because of her past sins.

It's curious, then, that Rukia is content when her life is about to come at its end. Rukia states that she has absolutely no regrets; this is likely because she's been promised that those who have come to save her will be spared. Again, this is because Rukia cares deeply for those with whom she forges bonds. Despite Rukia's insistence that she doesn't think bonds are necessary, she clearly shows that she does. She reaches out to Ichigo on the anniversary of his mother's death; yet, she does not pry. Rather, she offers him the chance to come to her when he's ready. And Rukia never forces anyone to do anything, and she never forces anyone to open up to her. This is yet another of Rukia's talents--she prods lightly, but doesn't force anyone to do anything for her. Mostly, that's because she genuinely believes she doesn't deserve love or even friendships. This changes, of course (but only slightly!), when Rukia learns of her sister and Byakuya's past.

But despite Rukia's terrible sense of self-worth and guilt, Rukia is amazingly loyal to her friends. She encourages them--a running theme of Ichigo and Rukia's relationship is her ability to pull him out of funks. This makes Rukia pretty inspiring, then. Those she knows well are easy for her to read: She can pinpoint their troubles and assure them that they are better than they think they are. And Rukia is very, very intelligent when it comes to other people. She's also more perceptive when it comes not to herself, but others. This is also what makes Rukia such an excellent teacher. She's able to communicate what needs to happen, what needs to be done, and how people can improve themselves.

Debt: To atone for her taking the life of her lieutenant, Kaien Shiba.
Inventory: Shihakusho, zanpakuto, a cell phone-type device.

Abilities:
ZANPAKUTO: Rukia's zanpakuto is named Sode no Shirayuki. Its element is ice--therefore, most of her zanpakuto-based attacks are ice. She's able to wield it expertly, and there are several "dances" she calls out to "release" her zanpakuto and reach its full potential.
KIDO: From a young age, Rukia has displayed an incredible ability to wield kido. She can even combine different spells to create a new one capable of multiple effects.
SPEED/SHUNPO: Rukia's small, but she makes up for her size with speed. She also has the ability to use her flash step, or "shunpo"--the ability to move very rapidly from one place to another. It looks like she disappears and reappears in a different place.
SWORDSMANSHIP: Rukia isn't awful with her swordsmanship; she's fast, which allows her to strike quickly and surely. She's still not that strong in it, though.
ENDURANCE: Rukia can sustain herself for a long time in long battles; she has a lot of stamina.
HIGH SPIRITUAL POWER: Naturally--it's one of the reasons she'd been able to become a shinigami.
HAKUDA/HAND-TO-HAND COMBAT: Rukia, quite literally, packs quite a punch. She's able to floor Ichigo, who's much bigger than she is, fairly easily.

Strengths and Weaknesses:
ACTING: Rukia is a phenomenal actress! She puts on a show for Ichigo's family in order to find a place to stay; she very easily charms her way into the Kurosaki household. At the beginning of the series, she manages to act her way through Ichigo and the others' escaping punishment.
DETERMINATION: When Rukia puts her mind to something, she sees it through. It's near impossible for her to give up; even if she's on the verge of dying, she attempts to see her goals through.
KINDNESS: Despite her chilliness, Rukia has a very kind heart. She hates to see those she loves hurt, and she's willing to sacrifice herself to keep her loved ones safe--such as when she acts like she despises Ichigo and wants nothing more to go back to the Soul Society when Renji Abarai and her brother Byakuya come to the world of the living for her.
MOTIVATION: Rather, her ability to motivate. Rukia is essentially the only one who can snap Ichigo out of his depression. It's not just Ichigo she can comfort and motivate; when Orihime feels inferior for her inability to fight like the others, Rukia comforts her and improves her mood.
SPIRIT: Literally and otherwise! Rukia's true strength lay in her ability to use kido. Even from a young age, Rukia has been capable of incredible shows of spiritual ability.
QUICK THINKING: Since she has to compensate for her lacking physical strength, Rukia combines quick thinking and her impressive kido ability to make for a formidable opponent. For example: In the fight against Aaroniero, she quickly infers what he is weak to and combines kido--without shouting the incantation, an incredible feat for anyone.

ALOOF: Rukia has a difficult time opening up to anyone. It's only when she gets very close to someone that she divulges information about herself; but even then, it is very rare. Rukia's cold demeanor tends to be off-putting, too, and she comes off as difficult to approach.
SELF-WORTH: Rukia has very little sense of self-worth. During her imprisonment in the Soul Society, she believed her fate to be well-deserved. Additionally, Rukia does not believe she's worthy of being saved, at least deep down, and during her fight with the Arrancar Aaroniero (who used her lieutenant Kaien Shiba's face), she believes she deserves to die for taking Kaien's life.
RUDE: Rukia, despite her usually polite manner, can be extremely rude to those she perceives as idiots. If someone doesn't garner Rukia's respect, she tends to be almost condescending.
TEMPER: Alongside her rudeness, Rukia has quite the temper. She does not take well to criticism of her drawings. If someone acts condescending toward Rukia, she tends to lash out, whether with kido or a well-aimed kick or punch.
STRENGTH: Despite Rukia's kido abilities, her physical strength suffers somewhat. Thus, she's a powerhouse for the equivalent of magic.

and, also, a written-up sample.

[ If you could have anything--anything in the world, for what would you wish? It's the current issue Rukia's having. The place isn't unfamiliar to her; or, at least, the general atmosphere of it. Yet... yet Rukia feels a little out of place. She's still getting used to feeling the thrum of spiritual power in her body, still getting used to the feeling of a sword at her hip. It's been so long, but the weight is a comfort, and it feels like only yesterday she'd transferred her powers. Funny, since it's been a pretty long time, and Rukia's been through so much. ]

A wish... [ Rukia murmurs. A wish. Anything, the woman in front of her says. Anything at all. Her first instinct is to wish for something for her friends. But they don't need to have her help with much of anything, do they? That's what makes this difficult. Rukia's wished for a lot of things, especially during her imprisonment; but now? Now, she's not sure what to wish for. It's like everything she'd desperately wanted for so long has vanished like smoke.

And Rukia isn't used to being speechless, so this is kind of new to her. No other question has ever given her so much trouble before! It would be so easy to be selfish... wouldn't it?

Selfish. There's a tightness in Rukia's chest, suddenly. If there's one thing she's wished for more than anything-- ]

I wish to atone for my taking the life of Lieutenant Kaien Shiba.

[ Rukia's shocked that her voice is so steady; or, at least, it should seem that way to the Witch. But Rukia... Rukia knows she's shaken up. The memories of that night are so fresh that it still hurts, that she can still feel the rain on her skin and smell the blood in the air, thick and nauseating.

Honestly, Rukia is not sure how the Witch will interpret her wish. But if it means that she's atoned for her sins... then Rukia doesn't think she really cares. ]
